There's one bit of info the late Madame Golon (otherwise very accurate and descriptive) does not even mention when dealing with major characters: their coats of arms, being all noble people.

The only one whose coat of arms becomes a plot point is Nicolas Fouquet - the red squirrel. Although he never appears directly as a character, always deals from behind the scenes by hired hands.

Joffrey de Peyrac's coat of arms is hastily destroyed during his trial and sentence, there's only a formless shape where it got chiseled out of stone in his Paris home. Nowhere it says what the coat of arms was. Also, the Barons' of Sancé de Monteloup coat of arms, Angélique's inherited right, is never described. Even as the impoverished countryside noblemen were historically the most proud of their ancestral arms, always displayed them wherever possible. Neither appears the coat of arms of the du Plessis-Bellière family , although it's hinted to have been sculpted in stone on the towers of their castle.

For a series so accurately researched and set among the greatest nobles of the French Kingdom, the lack of interest in heraldry is a bit disappointing.

True. We had already some similar discussion on the Czecho-Slovak forum.

In the case Joffrey de Peyrac, I always imagined that he used some heraldic symbols form the late counts of Toulouse - because eh was the last descendant of the family of Counts of Toulouse.

From the first book Angelique we do know about Joffreys family, that Joffrey was the youngest and last surviving descendant of the Counts de Toulouse.
